In this study, the analysis of the elastic and elasto-plastic stresses on the cross section of a composite laminate with circular hole subjected to in-plane loads is performed. The laminate with a circular hole is subjected to a uniform axial planar load along one edge where no load is exerted along the hole edge. Aluminum metal-matrix composite laminate is composed of four orthotropic plates oriented with different angles in the symmetric and anti-symmetric manner. The elastic and elastoplastic stresses are analyzed with the Finite Element Method (FEM) by means of a program developed with FORTRAN. By the end of the analysis the retained stresses due to yield of the composite laminate are evaluated and the results of the applications are compared.

Key Words: elasto-plastic stress • orthotropic composite material • finite elements method
